
Preparing for Your Laser Treatment: A Complete Pre-Care Guide
How you prepare for your laser treatment can meaningfully impact both your results and your safety. Following pre-care instructions reduces your risk of complications and optimizes your skin's response.
4 to 6 Weeks Before Treatment
- Avoid sun exposure to the treatment area — the single most important preparation step
- Discontinue self-tanner and spray tans at least 4 weeks prior
- Stop photosensitizing medications or discuss with your provider
1 to 2 Weeks Before
- Pause retinoids (retinol, tretinoin) for 7 to 10 days
- Discontinue acids (AHAs, BHAs, glycolic) for 5 to 7 days
- Avoid waxing, threading, or depilatory creams in the area
- If you have a history of cold sores, discuss prophylactic antivirals for facial laser
48 Hours Before
- Avoid alcohol (increases sensitivity and bruising risk)
- Avoid active skincare products on the treatment area
Day of Treatment
- Arrive with clean skin, free of makeup, lotions, and sunscreen
- Shave the treatment area the day before or morning of (for hair removal)
- Stay well hydrated
